January 5th – 8th 2021

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you all had a great winter break!  We are happy to be back in the classroom and the children really love their new rooms and groups!

Reading

This week we have reviewed all the letter sounds we learned so far this year.  We began learning about long vowel sounds.  Right before winter break, we looked at the magic ‘E’ at the end of CVCe words and how it changes the vowel sound into a long vowel.  In addition, we learned the phonics strategy “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking” . For example, they learned the letters “ai” make the long vowel sound like in the word train.  The children have practiced using the sounds in picture matches, games and in books.

Math

In math, we have started learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.  The children are learning about the difference between 2D and 3D shapes.  The have been learning all the names of 3D shapes, and how to describe them by their attribues.  The children already have an excellent understanding of 2D shapes.  They used their shape knowledge to complete activities like, building houses, shape match games, and detective hunts to find out their faces, sides, edges and corners (vertices).

Writing

I have loved hearing all about what your children did over winter break.  This week they wrote some wonderful stories to tell me all about it.  It sounds like everyone had a really good time! The children are working on adding punctuation marks to their work specifically perioids, and then following it with a capital letter to start their next sentence and apply the capitalization rule we’ve learned about.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend and maybe we will get some snow too!
