Brain Bucks, art and the library!!

This was the first week that some students were able to “cash in” their hard earned Brain Bucks for a special treat. The students have an opportunity  to earn Brain Bucks throughout the week. Brain Bucks are earned when I see great thinking taking place. They may earn a Brain Buck for contributing a great idea during a lesson or knowing the answer to a review question I might ask. Students are motivated by the Brain Bucks and encourage each other to work hard to get one. 🙂

We visited the JCC library on Monday for the first time this year! Students met Ms. Linda, our new story teller at the library. They checked out some books and learned how to find books at their level.

In math they’ve been really loving the game Wild, Wild, West. This game reinforces adding skills and requires the children to find the missing addend to an addition problem. They ask for this game daily and I’ve noticed their addition skills are improving!! So glad they love to learn. 🙂

The First Graders have been working with Mrs. Lerner in art class this week during their Project Based Learning time. They’ve been talking about shapes and colors and using nature to help them draw realistic pictures. They LOVE going to art! We have a group of talented artists.

During centers this week the students focused their learning on short vowel sounds, words with multiple meanings and sight word recognition. Next week we will extend our learning on this week’s Journeys lesson, since it is a short week. Because of the short week the students will not have a spelling test next week. Please use that time to continue practicing sight words.

Have a great weekend and enjoy some photos from the week!
