Class story

This week in writing we are starting to plan a class research paper about a specific zoo animal that we would like to learn more about. Since the first graders are still beginning writers, we will write this story as a group. We will discuss ideas, share our knowledge and collaborate about what we want to say and how we want to say it. Before we began we talked about our audience and what they might want to read. I explained that being a writer doesn’t always mean you write about only things that interest you. It’s ok to choose a topic you might not know a lot about as long as you are able to gather information to become an expert on the topic. We came up with a list of Zoo Animals that interested us and then went on a walk around the school to ask “our audience” what animals they would like to learn more about. This way, when our stories are complete and up in the hallway, those people will feel like they had a part in our final product!

On a side note, we have finished reading another Junie B. Jones book. We just finished “Aloha-ha-ha” and are now reading “Boss of Lunch”. We had a great surprise this morning when Liat came into the classroom to tell us that she is going to Hawaii, just like Junie B. Jones did!! The entire class was so excited for her. We just had to take a picture to show our excitement. Have fun Liat!! Take lots of pictures, just like Junie B. did. 🙂 We will miss you. Have a safe trip!

Leah Vorst earned enough Brain Bucks this week to read to the Kindergarten class. She was so excited and Mrs. Otte told me that she did a great job. Way to go Leah!
