December 8-12

This week in reading workshop we began a new unit-Nature Near and Far. We “dove” into our weekly story Sea Animals to learn about creatures like sea slugs and penguins. This information text helped students explore the essential question “Why do authors write stories”. The students are really starting to understand this concept and many can already tell that if we read a non-fiction story, such as an informational text, the author probably wrote the story to teach us about a certain topic.

Our phonics and spelling lessons focused on suffixes -s, -es, -ed and -ing. Students practiced reading sentences with the different tenses and decided which tense worked best for the sentence. They are becoming excellent writers and some are already incorporating topic sentences on their own.

Next week we will review skills from this year and work on some special Hannukah activities. There will not be spelling words or a Journeys test next week due to the Hannukah assemblies.

Have a happy and safe weekend.

Shabbat Shalom!
