Fantastic Fall is Here!
As the fall weather has moved in, we have continued working hard in second grade! Here we are at our morning meeting. The students were each sharing positive adjectives that they felt described themselves. (The word “awesome” was used a lot!)
Reading
This week we continued studying the reading skills that we began last week. I was very impressed with the students quick understanding of the difference between complete and incomplete sentences. We learned that a complete sentence must contain a subject and a predicate. Next week, we will read another Henry and Mudge story (the kids love them!) We will be discussing the reading strategy of author’s purpose. This skill asks students to think about why the author wrote the story or article. Our new grammar skill will be identifying questions vs. statements. The students should do a great job on this skill because they are becoming sentence experts! Our new vocabulary words will be: woods, turned, tops chipmunks, busy, picked, south, and grew.
Below, Zoe is sorting complete and incomplete sentences.
Spelling
The students came up with words with the long “e” and short “e” vowel sound. These were words like, peach, feel, and left. Next week, we will focus on the long “i” and short “i” vowel sound in words like hid and hide.
Writing
This was a very fun week for writing! We continued to add details to our work and focused writing to have one main idea. We also wrote friendly letters to people we care about. Our letters are now stored in our writing portfolios or displayed on our hallway bulletin board! The students’ letters were full of sweet details from their lives!
In this picture, the students are adding details to their writing.
Math
Exploration was the goal of math this week! We explored fact families, subtraction stories, and measurement. Fact families require the students to write two addition problems and two subtraction problems to go with 3 numbers. For example, 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 – 5 = 3, and 8 – 3 = 5. For measurement we studied pan balances and spring scales. We also determined the difference between an ounce and a pound. We will continue looking deeper into measurement and fact families next week!
Here we are cutting out our fact family triangles.
In these pictures, we are determining which object is heavier using our hands and the pan balance. We recorded our estimations and measurements!
Here we are, ending our week at the fabulous Yom Kippur assembly!
Oh, and by the way…we love recess!!
Have a wonderful Yom Kippur holiday with your families! See everyone next week!
