Nouns, captions, context clues, OH MY!

This week the first graders read the story The Storm, from our weekly Journeys Curriculum. While we read the story together we discussed what clues in the story help us understand how a character feels. Many students could connect with the boy in the story, who was afraid of a storm. We talked about looking at the characters body language to determine how they may be feeling.

Our grammar lessons focused on nouns. I introduced the game “Pictionary” to help the students better remember what a noun is. They LOVED guessing what their teammates were drawing and I LOVED watching their excitement. We have some great artists in this group!

Our writing lessons focused on captions and how they give more detailed information to the reader. Students brainstormed their favorite place to go with their families. They drew a picture of their family there and practiced writing a caption to match their drawing. It was fun for me to see the different places your families like to visit. 🙂

I hope everyone gets to visit one of their favorite places  this weekend! 🙂 See you next week! Shabbat Shalom.
