Nov. 30-Dec. 4
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving Break. I have started to do some interim assessments and I have asked the students to write a story about something they did over Thanksgiving Break. I am enjoying hearing about all of the yummy, delicious food they had and the family they spend time with. ๐
This week in math we are working on measurement. Students are learning how to read a thermometer and learning what the weather would feel depending on what the thermometer reads. We are also learning about units of measure such as feet, inches and centimeters. We are practicing estimating lengths and then using a ruler to find a closer measurement. Ms. Jadyn’s math class used their bodies as a nonstandard form of measurement to measure the length of our classroom. Everyone took a guess at how many first graders it would take to reach the length of the room. We discussed how using bodies isn’t the best way to measure things since everyone is a different height. Students have learned about standard and nonstandard units of measurement. It’s exciting to watch them learn how to use these everyday tools!
In language arts they are learning about possessive nouns and homophones. Students went on a scavenger hunt around the classroom to find sentences with possessive nouns. They practiced writing sentences with possessive nouns. It can be challenging at this age but they are doing a great job!
Also, the week before the break we chose our first representative to join student council. Morah Donna and I agreed that Sophie Manoim was a good first choice. Not only was she the one with the passion to get first grade into the meetings, she also makes good choices in class and is kind to her classmates. She did a great job sitting in on the meeting. ๐ We are looking for our next representative and the meeting will take place on December 17th, after school.
Next week is Hannukah so there will not be any homework going home! Enjoy your weekend. ๐ Shabbat Shalom.
