Readers and Mathematicians!

Everywhere I looked this week, I saw radical readers and marvelous mathematicians! You have some smart, hard working kids! Today, we completed our 250 High Frequency word spelling assessment. The students were so focused and paitent while we completed this test and it provided me with a lot of great data that I can use to differentiate spelling instruction.

This week, in reading, we practiced our expectations for picking out books and finding a spot to read. The students were encouraged to pick out books on their level that they think look interesting. Remember, books are like shoes, they need to fit just right! Trying to read a book that is way too hard, way too easy, or way too boring is not going to make you a stronger reader! In reading we have also begun working on our reading responses that will become part of our nightly homework routine. You can see readers responses your child wrote this week in their white reading notebook that should come home each day.

Here is a great example of a reading response from this week. Lael did a great job providing evidence for her thinking:

Each child read to me this week, so that I could determine their reading level using the On The Mark reading assessment. Your child should be able to tell you his or her level and it will be posted in all of their reading notebooks soon.

In math we have been busy, busy, busy! This week we reviewed time, money, and using calendars. We looked at numbers on a number grid and found patterns. We learned how to use the “Math Boxes” in our math journals, and studied our “My Math Reference Books.” Here are some fun math games that go with our current math unit:

A big congratulations goes out to our 7 raffle ticket winners this week: Charlie, Austin, Ari, Brielle, Nathan, Henry, and Daniel. Thank you to all of the students for being such great sports even if they didn’t win! The students are earning so many tickets for their great choices!

Reminders:
1. Progress reports came home today, so check backpacks.
2. Please send in your child’s library card as soon as you have it (we aren’t visiting the library until October!)
3. Check your child’s planner for updates on homework and other reminders.

I can’t wait to see these cute kids next week!
