Reading and Writing in 4th Grade
Each week in Reading we start a new story. We read it together as a class followed by a rereading the next day. Wednesdays have become “Vocabulary Web Wednesdays” where we focus on important vocabulary from the story. During the latter part of the week we have a literature discussion that revolves around a focus question to help the students think deeply about the story and strengthen their comprehension. Our 4th graders LOVE to work in partners; below you will see them rereading our story of the week, The Nightingale by Hans Christian Anderson, with a partner.
In Writing, we have been focusing on the trait of Ideas. We have tied this in to our Learning about Project Based Learning (PBL) lessons on presentation. The students took the idea of setting up their own camp and how they could present that in a poster in a way that would attract the reader’s attention and share the important information that their audience would need to know. The 4th graders came up with some very fun and interesting camps! See the photos of their camp posters below.
