Week Seventeen
The students had a great time at their virtual Hanukkah celebration today! More Hanukkah fun is coming on Monday!
Reading
This week the students studied facts and opinions. They read several nonfiction articles on winter related topics, like avalanches and the invention of earmuffs, and then recorded facts and opinions on these topics. We will continue working on this skill next year.
Vocabulary
As part of our vocabulary curriculum this week, the students practiced writing complete sentences. We reviewed this skill so that the students could create sentences that begin with a capital letter, end with punctuation, and contain a noun and a verb.
Spelling
The students studied words containing the blends “bl” and “fr.” When we get back the students will work on words that end in “k” or “ck.”
Writing
The students wrote real or made up stories about Winter wonderlands this week! I heard many great stories about sledding, Hanukkah, and even a Starwars story set on a very cold planet! 🙂
Math
We have begun our unit on geometry! This week we discussed how we are surrounded by space and that space contains lots of things which all have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world-from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). In this unit we’ll cover angles, intersecting and parallel lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and more! It is hard to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.
I’ll see everyone on Monday for our last day before Winter Break! 🙂
